Chain-reaction crash’s fuel spill causes gridlock on I-95 in Miami

Traffic in Miami came to a standstill Friday night after a multi-vehicle crash triggered a hazardous fuel spill on Interstate 95. The incident, which involved a fuel tanker and three other vehicles, unfolded on the northbound lanes near State Road 112.

What Happened?

According to Lt. Alex Camacho of the Florida Highway Patrol, the chain-reaction crash led to the fuel tanker overturning, spilling approximately 200 gallons of fuel across the highway.

  • One man was injured and transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment.
  • Miami Fire Rescue crews responded swiftly, applying absorbent material to minimize hazards before a hazmat team arrived on the scene.
  • As of 9:30 p.m., the impacted stretch of I-95 remained closed, causing hours-long delays and widespread gridlock throughout Miami-Dade County.

Environmental and Safety Concerns

Fuel spills pose both environmental and public safety risks. The quick response from fire rescue teams helped prevent potential ignition and environmental contamination. However, drivers faced extreme delays during the Friday evening commute.
